About the Author:
Gustavo Adolfo B cquer , cuyo verdadero nombre era Gustavo Adolfo Dom nguez Bastida, se traslad de Sevilla, donde naci en 1836, a Madrid para dedicarse a la literatura. Padeci tuberculosis y vivi en la penuria econ mica hasta que le nombraron censor de novelas y director literario de La ilustraci n de Madrid. Entre sus obras en prosa destacan textos como Cartas desde mi celda y Cartas literarias a una mujer, escritas en el monasterio de Veruela. Sin embargo, la c spide de su producci n se da con sus Rimas y sus Leyendas, de las que se desprende el l gubre y sublime esp ritu posrom ntico. Muri en Madrid, en 1870, dejando tras de s una estela literaria cuya influencia no tiene parang n en la historia de la literatura en lengua castellana.
