A fost al doilea fiu al lui Ronnie Cornwell si al Myrona "Maggie" St. Johnston. A primit educatia sa primara la Burnham Court School, Eastbourne, unde a primit si numele Russell "+Richard+" St +John+ Nevill. Initial, le Carré a urmat cursurile Universitatii Oxford, a reluat insa apoi si a absolvit in 1954.
