Anna Sewell s-a nascut in apropierea orasului Norwich, Marea Britanie, pe 30 martie 1820. Ea era fiica unei familii de tarani care s-au mutat in urma cu multi ani in aceasta regiune. Incepand cu varsta de 14 ani, Anna a suferit de afectiuni cronice, ce au determinat-o sa-si petreaca ultimii ani intr-un scaun cu rotile. Aceste probleme de sanatate au impiedicat-o sa-si urmeze planurile de a se alatura grupurilor de reforma sociala.
